Remote or Hybrid option?Job SummaryThe Department of Integrative Biology invites applications for one or more Academic Advisors. These are full-time (1.0 FTE ), 12-month, professional faculty positions. Applications submitted to this recruitment pool are reviewed on an as needed basis. Qualified applicants will be contacted when positions become available. This position will perform academic advising and program support for Zoology majors (Ecampus and Corvallis campus) and Biology majors (Corvallis campus). The advisor may also support students with the biology minor declared. In the Integrative Biology Department, academic advisors typically work with students during their entire life cycle at OSU , supporting decision making about coursework and career development. The advisor will also participate in School of Life Sciences and College of Science recruitment and retention efforts. Some evening and weekend work may be required. In-state and out-of-state travel may be required. The Department of Integrative Biology is part of the School of Life Sciences and receives support for its academic program from the College of Science. The Department of Integrative Biology supports two large Corvallis Campus majors, Biology and Zoology, and an Ecampus Zoology degree. The department has developed an internationally recognized graduate program in conservation, evolutionary biology and marine ecology with faculty working in these areas at the level of the cell, organism and community. The Zoology major is one of the largest Ecampus programs offered and also supports a robust on-campus cohort. Ecampus at OSU offers over 85 programs available to be taken completely online through Oregon State Ecampus, which has been ranked in the top 10 online programs in the nation for the last seven years .

Key Responsibilities60% Academic Advising:
- Provide primary academic advising services for on campus (Corvallis) and Ecampus (online) Biology and Zoology majors. Advising includes decision-making in coursework for general education (baccalaureate core) and major/minor specific coursework, as well as career advising and professional development.
- Advise new students during first-year and transfer student orientations.
- Assist biology and zoology students with general requests such as change of major forms, petitions, referral to appropriate services, etc.
- Participate in proactive advising interventions. Including potentially 1:1 reach-out to students in response to reports each term.
- Assist students in navigating academic standing, including seeking reinstatement after suspension from the University.
30% Program Support:
- Promote diversity and support equity, justice, and inclusion in the Department of Integrative Biology, School of Life Sciences and College of Science programs, including participation in proactive advising efforts to support students from diverse backgrounds. This position facilitates a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds.
- Participate in Integrative Biology faculty meetings.
- Serve on the College of Science Scholarship Committee by reviewing IB scholarship applications.
- Serve on other university, college, school, or department committees as assigned.
The following activities are shared across the Integrative Biology (IB) advising team and may or may not be part of the position in any given year.
- Coordinate and facilitate the delivery and instruction of BI 198 Professional Development I: Biology and Zoology first year course (1 credit, teach once per year) for Biology and Zoology majors (on campus and Ecampus).
- Co-advise the Integrative Biology Club, some events require evening and weekend hours.
- Prepare and maintain advising materials such as program bulletins, websites, etc.
10% Other:
- Communicate and collaborate with personnel in the Integrative Biology department, the College of Science, Ecampus, and across OSU , as needed.
- Attend local, regional, and national meetings, as appropriate.
- Participate in student recruitment activities. Meet with prospective students and parents as part of OSU’s Visit program. Represent OSU and the College of Science at various college fairs, community college visits, and recruiting events for students from marginalized or minoritized communities.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Note: Duties may change depending on advising needs.
What You Will Need
- Bachelor’s degree in a life science field or a Bachelor’s degree from any field plus a combination of two years of life science related college course work or relevant professional life science experience.
- One year of experience in college or university academic advising, or student activities programming, or teaching/counseling of secondary or post-secondary individuals. Including at least one aspect of leadership, teamwork, organized planning, and problem-solving.
- Experience and demonstrated actions working with and successfully supporting diverse populations coming from historically excluded populations, such as racial and ethnic, gender diverse, minoritized sexual identities, abilities, disability, veteran statuses, and socioeconomic levels.
- Ability to communicate clearly with a diverse group of students and staff through written (electronic and other) and oral communication.
- Ability to maintain confidential, detailed, and accurate student records.
- Skilled in Microsoft Suite (or similar program)

What We Would Like You To Have
- Work experience related to ecology, biology, animal biology/zoology, or related field.
- Master’s degree in a life science field or a student services related area, or other graduate level training in a relevant field.
- Experience with student information system and technology, such as but not limited to Web for Advisors, MyDegrees, Ellucian Banner, and CORE .
- Experience with web design or graphic design to develop student resources
Working Conditions / Work ScheduleOccasionally helps with tours, recruitment and/or marketing events at various locations. Some evening and weekend work is required. In-state and out-of-state travel may be required.
