Easy Healthy Low Fat Baked Apples

Baked apples are the kind of simple old-fashioned dish that never really goes out of style—probably because they're healthy and delicious.

Who can resist the smell of cinnamon baked apples wafting through the house? Not me.

I took them to a friend's house for dessert a while back. Drizzled with a little low-fat custard sauce, they were a hit with both the adults and the kids!

These healthy baked apples make a great dessert—plain or topped with low-fat vanilla ice cream or whipped cream—for a real treat.

I think they're great as part of a healthy breakfast from time to time as well, especially alongside a serving of Greek Yogurt.

What Kind of Apples Are Best for Making Baked Apples?

The best baking apples offer a balance of sweet and tart flavors as well as flesh that doesn't break down in the oven. Some of my favorites include: Honeycrisp, Granny Smith, Braeburn, Rome Beauty, Golden Delicious, Cortland, and Gala.

How Do You Make Baked Apples?

This recipe couldn't be simpler. They're easier than a lot of other apple desserts, since you don't have to fuss with peeling and/or slicing the apples.

Some baked apple recipes call for leaving the apple whole intact and removing the core, but this is tricky to do and takes longer to bake.

For this baked apple recipe, I cut them in half, scooped out the core, and added the filling and baked until tender 30 to 45 minutes—depending on the size of your apples.

To make this dairy-free, you could substitute coconut oil for the butter.

Step 1: Prepare the Apples

Wash and dry your apples before cutting them in half and scooping out the core.

Step 2: Fill with the Topping
I added 2 tablespoons quick cooking oats (not instant) and 1 tablespoon chopped nuts to the butter, sugar and spices in this batch.

Step 3: Bake Until Tender

My favorite variation of this recipe: I added 2 tablespoons of quick oats and 1 tablespoon chopped nuts to the butter, brown sugar and spices. This increases the calories to 136 and the WW Freestyle SmartPoints to *3.

Can I Turn This into a Healthy Recipe for Two?

Yes, just use 1 apple, 1 tablespoon brown sugar, 1-½ teaspoons of butter, ¼ teaspoon cinnamon and ⅛ teaspoon nutmeg.

Can I Double This Recipe?

Yes, simply double all the ingredients in the recipe.

Variations:

These healthy baked apples can be customized too. Feel free to add up to ¼ cup total of other healthy ingredients to the sugar, butter and spices, such as:

  • Chopped dried fruit such as raisins or dried cranberries
  • Chopped nuts such as almonds, pecans or walnuts
  • low-fat granola
  • Quick cooking oats

You can also substitute maple syrup, honey or your favorite sugar substitute for the sugar, if you prefer. Enjoy!
