Expert Tips

  • Using a mandolin to slice the apples works best. Alternatively, use a sharp knife.
  • Don’t cut them too thin, as they can burn without actually crisping up.
  • Try to make sure the apple slices are all the same thickness so they will cook at the same rate.
  • If thickness varies, divide into batches according to thicknessand cook similar size apple slices together.
  • If some slices are cooking quicker than others, simplyremove the quicker cooking ones earlier.
  • Note that your apple chips may not be fully crispy when done, but don’t fret. They will crisp upon cooling.
  • Cook time will also depend on the thickness of your apple slices. If they are very thin, they may cook a bit faster.
  • Air fryer temperatures can vary depending on the make and model, so this recipe includes a range of suggested cook times.

Delicious Variations

  • Vary the Spices – Use cardamom, nutmeg, apple pie spice, or pumpkin pie spice.
  • Vary the Cooking Time Air fry a little longer to make these crisper for snacking, and less time when you want softer apple chips for topping granola.
  • Add Some Sweetness – By including a dash of honey, maple syrup, or vanilla extract. You can also coat them in a cinnamon sugar mixture before cooking.
  • Use Different Fruit – For a totally different flavor profile, follow this recipe and use pears instead of apples.

Prep Ahead and Storage

  • Prep Ahead – To avoid browning, do not slice apples in advance.
  • Storage – Let the apple chips cool completely before storing them in an airtight container. Keep at room temperature for 7-9 days.

FAQs

What Type of Apples Are Best for Making Apple Chips?

I made these using Braeburn apples, which have a nice crispness and subtly sweet flavor. And many people tend to use Red Delicious apples to make apple chips.

For an even sweeter treat, use Honeycrisp, Gala, or Fuji apples. Gravenstein and Granny Smith varieties are the best apples if you want extra crispy chips that are a bit on the tart side.

This is one of the most flexible air fryer apple recipes, and any variety will work, so choose your favorite apples!

How To Reduce The Chance Of Burning?

Air Fryer temperatures do vary, so if your apple chips are burning, try cooking them at a slightly lower temperature.

You could also cut the slices a little thicker.
I also recommend keeping a close eye on them and removing them as soon as you see golden brown and crisp apple chips.

Are Apple Chips Healthy?

Apple chips are a low calorie snack that is suitable for a wide range of dietary needs. Air frying apple chips gives you a nutritious snack that is a great source of Vitamin A and C as well as a variety of minerals and antioxidants. Making apple chips is a great alternative to traditional fried snacks.

Easy Air Fryer Apple Chips - Recipes From A Pantry (2024)

FAQs

When making apple chips is it best to air fry or dehydrate? ›

Every grocery store sell bags of pre-made apple chips, and they're not bad at all. However dehydrated apples in air fryer are just THAT much better.

How to make Pepperidge Farm turnovers in the air fryer? ›

Air-fry individual fruit turnovers straight from the freezer for 14 to 16 minutes at 350°F to 360°F, turning once halfway through.

Why are my apples not getting crispy in the dehydrator? ›

Wash the apples and peel if desired. Remove the seeds and core using an apple corer or paring knife. Slice the apples into ¼"-⅜" thick rings or slices using a mandoline or sharp knife. The thinner they are, the crispier they will become in the dehydrator.

Why do you soak chips in water before air frying? ›

While it may seem like a pain, soaking the potatoes in hot water for 10 minutes prior to cooking them in the air fryer is essential. The water removes excess starch, allowing the fries to be their crispiest. Instead of soaking them in large bowl of cold water, I like to use hot water to cook the potatoes slightly.

How long does it take to dehydrate an apple in an air fryer? ›

Place a small metal rack over your apples to keep them from running amok, then run your air fryer at 300°F for roughly 15 minutes. Rotate, flip, and stir every five minutes to help your apples dehydrate more evenly.

Should dehydrated apples be chewy or crispy? ›

1 Answer. It's just how long you dry them. Thin apple slices work best for crunchy chips and then just dry them till they're crunchy - sometimes as much as 18-20 hours. Soft, chewy dehydrated apples just go for a shorter time.

Why can t you put batter in an air fryer? ›

Recipes that use a wet batter, including fried chicken, will end up being very messy if cooked in an air fryer. This is because there won't be enough hot oil to set the batter, and it will likely drip everywhere rather than forming a crunchy coating.

Can I use a bread tin in an air fryer? ›

You can use any ovenproof dish or mold in the Philips Airfryer, whether it is made of glass, ceramic, metal, or silicone.

Can you put baking paper in an air fryer? ›

Baking paper

Some do not suggest the use of baking paper or tin foil as it can affect the airflow inside the air fryer. If you are using baking paper, cut the paper to the size required and ensure the meat can weigh it down adequately. Failing to do so may result in the paper flying up into the element and burning.

What can I do with so many apples? ›

You could also make applesauce, apple butter or apple jelly. You could put them in muffins, crumbles and cakes. You could layer them in sandwiches. You could roast them with sausages or toss them into kale salad.

What temperature do you dehydrate apples? ›

Drying (dehydrator)

Set initial temperature to 145°F when there is surface moisture on the fruit. After one hour, reduce temperature to 135 to 140°F to finish drying the slices.

Do air fryers make better chips? ›

Rather than cooking your frozen chips in the oven, try them out in your air fryer for super crunchy chips. Personally, I think they have more crunch compared to regular oven cooking them.

Is an air fryer as good as a dehydrator? ›

Air fryers are capable of dehydrating food as they function quite similarly to dehydrators. But you must check your own individual air fryer to see what settings you need to use to dehydrate your own food. Your air fryer needs to be on a low heat to be able to dehydrate food, and it must be at a temperature below 45℃.

How long do apple chips take in dehydrator? ›

Because every apple variety is different, and every dehydrator works a little differently, the apple chips will need to be dehydrated for 8-12 hours. So after 8 hours, check on the chips every hour. You'll know the chips are done when they are not soft or flexible at all.

Do chips taste better in an air fryer? ›

While the deep fryer wins on texture, the air fryer definitely delivered a better taste. Because my potato had cooked in all of my flavor and seasoning, it had absorbed it far better than the deep fried fries. This resulted in an almost-caramelized taste which was incredibly delicious.
