It is no surprise that Jeremy is a big College Football fan which means the sounds of sacks, whistles and cheers are pretty constant from our TV during this time of the year. This also means that I have the challenge of entertaining his love for all things football. Not only does this include meals and snacks but also refreshments. This is more of a challenge than one would think but in all honestly I have started to rely on the One of a Kind Dr Pepper to get us through the College Football season.

We love all things Dr Pepper but when I went to my local King Soopers I was surprised at the limited edition College Championship can that I found and well, I may have bought a few OR a lot for Jeremy to enjoy during the next couple weeks.

As I unloaded my car from my shopping trip I suddenly realized that I had WAY more Dr Pepper than I though and boom the idea popped into my head. The snow was falling and I knew that the house would do a food warm up if I got some chili on the stove but instead of our normal chili I spiced it up with our favorite drink! Guess what, now, this is the ONLY way I will make chili.

Ingredients:

2 TBSP oil – I used Olive

1 pound ground turkey – you could also use ground beef

1 large yellow onion, diced

3 garlic gloves, minced

1 red bell pepper, diced

2 green peppers, diced

1 TBSP chili powder

1/2 TBSP cumin

1/4 tsp cayenne – more or less as desired

1 tsp oregano

1/4 tsp allspice

1/2 tsp thyme

salt and pepper to taste

1 12 ounce can Dr Pepper (diet for a lighter dish)

1 cup chicken broth

2 TBSP tomato paste

1 15 ounce can pinto beans, drained

1 15 ounce can chili beans, do not drain

1 15 ounce can Mexican diced tomatoes

Directions:

1. In a large pot, heat oil on medium heat and add the ground turkey. Brown turkey, about 5-6 minutes or until no longer pink.

2. Add onions to meat and saute until tender and translucent.

3. Add bell peppers and cook for additional 3-4 minutes.

4. Stir in garlic and cook for another minute.

5. Stir in spices and cook for 2 minutes.

6. Add Dr Pepper, tomato paste and chicken broth to the mixture – stir in well!

7. Continue to stir until tomato paste is completely dissolved.

8. Add the beans and diced tomatoes.

9. Bring chili to a simmer and keep at a simmer for at least 30 minutes. This recipe can simmer for up to 2 hours as long as you stir occasionally.

10. Serve hot from the pot!

11. Top chili with sour cream, shredded cheese, green onions and corn chips! Delicious!

Well, this Dr Pepper One of a Kind Chili recipe totally made our house smell amazing and the taste was really One of a Kind! The sweet soda makes the spice of the chili the perfect combo. Even the kids loved making their bowl of chili by topping it with cheese and corn chips. I, for one, went for the loaded chili and added all the fixings. As we sat down to watch some College Football and enjoy the falling snow I started thinking about how easy this really is for a Homegating party with family and friends. Most people love some hearty chili and with the toppings you can totally customize your meal. Pair this with a cold Dr Pepper and you are set for a great day of College Football!
