Coffins are wonderful things - because not only do they eliminate the bad thoughts from seeing dwarf-corpses, but winessing a dwarf's burial in a nice coffin in a nice room can actually cause a good thought.

Ooh! So I wasn't wasting time engraving my catacombs in all those forts? Or does it only work if the coffin is actually designated a tomb?

I was /wondering/ about the distinction between a regular burial coffin and a tomb.
Right now, all my coffins are in a 10x10 room, packed in like sardines (largely due to the murderous crisis in progress). I guess tombs are kind of like Bedrooms and Offices, in that they can be assigned to specific d0rfs?

You guess correctly. Some nobles will demand tombs of certain qualities.

Per the wiki:
While tombs can be designated from coffins, only some nobles specifically demand them. The more self-important the noble, the more ornate the tomb must be, naturally.
so you don't have to assign tombs to everyone (and in fact, per wiki, "a coffin that's assigned as a tomb with an owner of "nobody" will not be used for general burial"), you just hafta make a nice Hall Of Honored Dead packed to the gills with coffins.

Right. I was wondering if engraving my HotHD and/or using quality coffins in it will make for happy funeral thoughts for friends of dwarfs buried there, or if the quality of coffins / engravings only matter if the coffin is in a room-designated Tomb.
I mean, I always engrave it anyway, because engravers need something constructive to do, but still.

Here's a couple funny messages that I've never seen before.
While the tantrum-spiral was winding down: "New migrants have arrived, despite the danger." (Many of 'em got killed by berzerk dwarves, I'm sure.)
Now that my f0rt's been productive and ticking over like clockwork, a season or two later: "Some migrants have decided to brave this terrifying place, knowing it may be their tomb."
Guys! All those problems we had were in the *past*! Ancient history! Painthails is a /wonderful/ place to be a dwarf; there's certainly no shortage of work and plenty of economic ore left to dig and refine, and we've only just recently constructed a grand burial vault! Fresh drinking water is coming Very, Very Soon! There's nothing to worry about here!
EDIT: Ohf*ck, I missed something. Stockpile: "Foods: 615. Drink: 4". GO, FARMERS! FARM LIKE YOU'VE NEVER FARMED BEFORE!

I don't know if this is actually correct but I think I read on the official forum that shells are created by cooking cave lobster now. I haven't tried it yet, though.
My problem atm: Are merchant wagons still in the game? I have full depot access with no obstacles blocking the 3 wide wagons and yet the dwarves and humans only arrive with their mules. Am I missing something?
I don't get shells from cave lobsters but I do get some from turtles. Maybe it's a bug?
OTOH I have set both to "no cooking" to ensure normal eating.

Make sure you can trace a path all the way to the map's edge. All it takes is a couple extant boulders to block the wagons. At worst, you might need to build a road just to make sure.
I have seen no wagon in a caravan so far, maybe you get them only if the caravan is really big, after some time trading with that civ?

I remember that in the previous version, standard dorf will get a bad though if they don't have a tomb, but it happens after a couple years.
I would bothe only for legendary dorfs though...
