Chocolate Salty Balls Recipe from South Park's Chef (1)

This Chocolate Salty Balls recipe is inspired by and adapted from South Park’s Chef song “Chocolate Salty Balls” and is part of a link up with like minded geeky foodies. We’ve all made a toon inspired food dish for this link up. #ToonFood

Warning: If you are unaware of what South Park is, it’s a cartoon for adults. Please don’t mistake this cartoon for a children’s cartoon. South Park is an animated satirical series with a lot, and I mean A LOT of swearing, mature themes and over-the-top cartoon violence. I think the age rating is 15+ to watch it. That said, if you’re mature enough and can look past this you’ll see an hilarious cartoon.

Ok, now that I’ve got the warning out of the way, let’s go ahead with the recipe. In the cartoon the character Chef sings a song called Chocolate Salty Balls, and ever since I heard the song I’ve been wanting to try out his recipe.

Needless to say, when the topic of toon food came up for a link up, this was the first thing that popped into my mind. So I set out to recreate the recipe. First exactly as mentioned in the song but I didn’t like it much, the balance of the recipe was just off, so I got to tweaking a few things without messing too much with the original recipe from the song. It took me 5 tries to perfect the recipe.

Let’s get started with the Chocolate Salty Balls recipe

First off, get all your ingredients.

Chocolate Salty Balls Recipe from South Park's Chef (2)

Sugar, flour, melted butter, melted chocolate, cherry brandy, egg whites, cinnamon, baking powder, vanilla and salt. Next to that you’ll also need extra butter, salt, condensed milk and golden syrup for the topping.

First, prepare your flour mixture by sifting flour.

Baking powder.

And salt into a bowl and set aside.

Next, turn on your sound and click on the video of the song above and start singing. ?

Now, take one table spoon of cinnamon (sing it with me…)

[The song says two tablespoons but I like it better just using one]

Chocolate Salty Balls Recipe from South Park's Chef (7)

And two or three egg whites

[I use three]

Chocolate Salty Balls Recipe from South Park's Chef (8)

Now let’s go add the butter (melted…).

Chocolate Salty Balls Recipe from South Park's Chef (9)

Stick it all in a bowl baby, stir with a wooden spoon.

[Aaaand you’ll find out that stirring with a wooden spoon really doesn’t do much, so grab a whisk instead]

Chocolate Salty Balls Recipe from South Park's Chef (10)

Whisk it all up to a nice and thick, fluffy consistency.

Chocolate Salty Balls Recipe from South Park's Chef (11)

Pour in a cup of unsweetened chocolate.

Chocolate Salty Balls Recipe from South Park's Chef (12)

And a half a cup of brandy.

[I use cherry brandy]

Chocolate Salty Balls Recipe from South Park's Chef (13)

Then throw in a bag or two of sugar.

Chocolate Salty Balls Recipe from South Park's Chef (14)

And just a pinch of VANILLA.

[I’m obviously using my homemade vanilla extract again]

Chocolate Salty Balls Recipe from South Park's Chef (15)

Mix it all with a whisk till combined.

Chocolate Salty Balls Recipe from South Park's Chef (16)

Pour in the flour mixture, you’ll be in heaven soon.

Chocolate Salty Balls Recipe from South Park's Chef (17)

Mix it all up good.

Chocolate Salty Balls Recipe from South Park's Chef (18)

To a shiny thick, brownie batter consistency.

Chocolate Salty Balls Recipe from South Park's Chef (19)

Grease up your cake ball tin, cause I hate when my balls stick. Preheat the oven to 350 °F / 175 °C and give that spoon a lick!

[Fill the cake ball tin all the way to the top. The batter won’t fully rise to the top so you want as much in them as possible. Stick it into the oven and bake for 20 minutes

When your balls are baked, take them out of the oven an leave to cool in the tin for a few minutes before taking them out and leaving them to cool further on a wire rack.]

Chocolate Salty Balls Recipe from South Park's Chef (20)

In the meantime add condensed milk, golden syrup, butter into a saucepan and bring to a boil. Add salt and boil some more till you get a thick caramel sauce.

Chocolate Salty Balls Recipe from South Park's Chef (21)

The sauce should be thick and golden like this. Drizzle the caramel sauce over the chocolate balls. Finish with a few salt flakes on top to make them proper Chocolate Salty Balls.

Chocolate Salty Balls Recipe from South Park's Chef (22)

Hey everybody have you seen my balls they’re big and salty and brown (with a salted caramel topping). If you ever need a quick pick me up just stick these balls in your mouth and suck ’em!

Instructions

Chocolate Balls

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 °F / 175 °C. Grease a cake pop tin.

  2. Sift baking powder, salt and flour into a bowl and set aside.

  3. In a bowl, mix cinnamon, egg whites and butter until combined and a thick fluffy consistency.

  4. Add melted chocolate, brandy, sugar and vanilla and mix until combined.

  5. Add flour mixture and mix until combined and smooth. Don't over mix the batter. You should end up with a silky, smooth consistency.

  6. Pour batter into the cake pop tin. Make sure each hole is filled up to the top.

  7. Bake for 15-20 minutes.

Salted Caramel Topping

  1. Add condensed milk, butter and golden syrup to a saucepan and bring it to a boil.

  2. Boil for 4 minutes and add the salt. Boil for another 4 minutes or until the caramel has a nice golden color and is thick enough to drizzle.

  3. Turn off the heat and let the caramel cool down. Once cooled drizzle over the cake balls. You can put the cooled caramel into a piping bag and pipe it on the cake balls as well.

Recipe Notes

Please note that the cup measurements in this recipe are approximate. I have added cups for those that prefer using cups. The recipe is most accurate using weights measurements.

  • Golden syrup is a cane sugar syrup which is commonly used in British baking recipes. Golden Syrup can be found on Amazon(affiliate).
  • To make the balls you'll need a cake popbaking pan.
  • Cool down the caramel and transfer to a piping bag to decorate the balls more easily.

I guess you could use another type of alcohol such as rum.

Hello, I was just wondering, could you use powdered chocolate? We have Hershey’s Dark cocoa powder that I use when I do anything chocolate. If I could use it, how much could I use?
    Thanks

Hi, I haven’t tried making it with chocolate powder before. For 1 cup of unsweetened chocolate I would try substituting it with 6 tablespoons of cocoa powder and 1/4 cup softened butter and see if that’ll work. I’m not sure if that’ll work, but that’s how I would start of testing out the recipe using cocoa powder.

      Hi Dan,
You can also use a brownie tin and make it as a brownie. You just don’t have the ball shape. To get the ball shape you’ll need a cake ball tin.

Hi, can I just bake it without any form? I would shape the dough into balls, put it on a regular baking sheet and bake it like this. Is it possible?

I don’t think the batter will hold the ball shape unfortunately. That’s why I used a form.

How big a bag is really depends on the brand and the store etc. I use 400 grams of granulated sugar which is about a small bag of granulated sugar that I can buy in my local supermarket. If you need help converting you can change the recipe from Metric to US Imperial. Or check out http://www.traditionaloven.com/conversions_of_measures/sugar_amounts.html

      Hi Sandy,
Golden Syrup is a syrup made from pure cane sugar. You can find it on Amazon:
      https://www.amazon.com/Lyles-Golden-Original-All-Natural-Cooking/dp/B0000EYP2U/ref=sr_1_1_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1473714827&sr=8-1&keywords=golden+syrup
I think it’ll differ in each country where exactly it can be bought. In the Netherlands I usually find it in stores that sell cake supplies as well as certain supermarkets and international supermarkets.
