One cannot cut 6 squares from a 9x12 in sheet. They will be either 2 in on amside or 1.5 in on a side. Not to mention geometrically a rectangle cannot be formed from multiple squares of equal size. High scholl geometry

Why in the world do you want to grate the apples? Try fujis or pippins and cut them as you would for apple pie but more finely. Don't grate them. Add a few cranberries or cherries. And sweeten with maple syrup. You need to add a dash or two of salt too, and maybe a little tapioca for fun. A dash of vanilla extract and/or fresh grated nutmeg wouldn't hurt either. Much, much better.

I made these over Thanksgiving when we had family over and they went very quickly--everyone loved them! I only used 3 (rather than 4) tablespoons of sugar in the apple mix and 1 (rather than 2) in the cinnamon sugar mix, and I left out the coarse sugar.

Jeff is right that you cannot get 6 squares from a 9x12 sheet, but wrong that "a rectangle cannot be formed from multiple squares of equal size." You could roll out to a 8x12 sheet and get 6 squares of 4x4 inches.

Ed H

Jeff, you can come close. Cut one line in the middle of the 9 inch dimension; cut two in the 12-inch dimension. You get 6 "squares" that are 4-1/2 inches by 4 inches.

Susanna

How about a mix of shredded and chopped apple? I do this when I am make bircher muesli for the intense apple flavor with the apple crunch. Will give this a try and report back.

Annie

These worked perfectly. Could easily add another apple to the batch but no more. Maybe even add the cinnamon to the sugar then mix with the apples, rather than sprinkle on the outside. Use sugar only on the outside.

Irwin

Use about 1 pound of apples grated. Made 4 turnovers from 9X9" filo dough. Don't overfill.

These were great, but the pastry-apple ratio was far too high (I like a lot of filling and a thin crust). I doubled the apples, used only 1 pastry sheet, and made 6 total. I also roughly chopped the apples, rather than shredded them, as others mentioned. I'll definitely make again -- I'm pastry-challenged but these were simple and tasty, and everyone enjoyed them.

Ivy

30 min is a tad overly optimistic. With the 9x12, I cut into 9 and made mini pies. I hadn’t heard of grating the apple, but a good option.

Amy

After making as written, I agree with the folks suggesting chopping at least some of the apples. Also, I found the amount of filling to be skimpy. While I'm always happy to eat puff pastry, I would have liked more than the small dab of filling.

For a non baker, cutting dough in rectangles and folding them on the diagonal, took some fussing to get a nice triangle. ( is there a trick to it?) But all that manipulation that looked uneven and messy in the raw stage dissapeared once the turnovers were baked. Tasted yummy, and I'll make them again.

A great way to use apples from our tree and these were easy, tasty and light. Made one batch to eat and one to freeze. Use finely chopped apple rather than grated just because that was easier and that worked fine. Needed more than a cup of apple - I used about two cups for 18 pastries (cut nine from each sheet of pastry dough). Next time will make them larger.

Sarah

Weird recipe. I misread it at first and ended up adding the cinnamon and sugar (as well as cloves, nutmeg, allspice, and cardamom) to the filling instead of on top, which actually turned out amazing -- I think it would have been bland if I had followed the recipe. Also, I doubled the filling and even that was barely enough filling for the turnovers I cut from one sheet of pastry. In the end they turned out pretty tasty, but only because I barely followed the recipe.

Love these.....will make again.

Mika

I used a mix of grated and chopped apples for more texture and reduced the sugar to one cup. It turned out well.

Patty

These are terrific. I have made them annually since this recipe appeared. Super easy to assemble. Toss in freezer. A crowd pleaser.

Jill

Really excellent. Cut the recipe in half to make 6 turnovers. Use 1 apple, skip the sugar and cinnamon (or use just for me), and roll the puff pastry carefully to keep the sides straight (and measure!). Brush any extra flour off pastry when adding the apples. After freezing for 20 minutes, pack in 2/bag zip lock baggies.Bake for 20 minutes.Add premium vanilla ice cream!

judi

Added nutmeg and cinnamon to the filling. Needed 30 mins or will try hotter oven next time. Yumma like maccas apple pie

Poojitha

Loved these turnovers! Made them for a July 4th BBQ and homemade vanilla ice cream. Everyone loved them. I do think this could take 3 apples since grating and squeezing them result in very little filling. I will be making more of these and leaving them in the freezer for last minute cravings.

Kati Koszegvari

When I make this again I will wait to preheat the oven. I didn't read the instructions carefully enough to realize I had the oven heating for a very long time before the turnovers were oven-ready!

Sally

Almost anything can be used for the filling -- our favorite is raspberries.

stephany

Really good and freeze very well. Just cook longer than they say, until tops are brown and the gloss of the pastry has gone away.
